Thank you for being a friend”! Over the weekend tvland sitcom enthusiast lost one of televisions funniest actors: Beatrice “Bea” Author. Bea ( not to be confused with another “Bey”) has a long television and theater history from Fiddler on the Roof to Maude or most notably, her role as Dorothy on the NBC classic Golden Girls. The vibe and energy she brought to the show (along with the others) was honored by several Emmys. We all love and enjoyed the show. I mean, as a woman, no matter the age, you can identify with at least one of the characters. We’ve all been a little promiscuous at times, we’ve all had “clueless” moments and we’ve all had to use sarcasm (my specialty) to get a point across. Because these characteristics are so identifiable, it made us love these characters on another level. Now granted, when I was watching this show as a youngin, I didn’t really know what was going on, but now when I hear Blanche use phrases such as “Better late than pregnant” I cant stop laughing. I can honestly say, Golden Girls, Martin, and maybe one or two other shows are the few that can make me literally LAUGH OUT LOUD. Oh how I wish they could bring back comedies with senior citizens. There is no way in hell that show would survive today. These days seniors are the new “token”. You either have an elder in the show (usually a parent or nosy neighbor) or you have a black character (usually a friend, the mail man or officer). These four women made it work. Now, I originally wanted this post to be about Bea, but even with her countless history of work, I’m only familiar with Golden Girls, respectfully. A golden show that wouldn’t have worked without any of these women. Geesh, now I feel a little bad because my brother used to say Bea could have been Ronald McDonald. It wasn’t nice, but he meant no harm. But I found it to be hilarious. So I dedicate this blog to you Bea and this song. And while I was a little heart broken to hear she has moved on, as my wise friend said “ Don’t be sad....she had a full life…she was golden…” Yes, I know that was cheesy, but I like cheese! Let us not judge Bea, but have a moment of silence. RIP 1922-2009.
Now, I leave you with some of my favorite Dorothy quotes:
1.Rose:Can I ask a dumb question?
Dorothy: Better than anyone I know
2. Blanche: I can't believe you said that! Oh if I weren't a lady I'd deck you.
Dorothy: You try and I'll have you on your back so fast you'll think you're out on a date.
3.Rose: Well, I'm here if you want to pick my brain.
Dorothy: Rose, honey. Maybe we should leave it alone and let it heal.
